4 Types of Tub Drains for Freestanding Bathtubs

types of tub drains

When it comes to selecting a freestanding tub, you’ll need to consider many technical factors including existing plumbing layout, drain orientation, and whether or not a tub drain and overflow assembly is included with your new tub.

Only some freestanding tubs and tub kits come with tub waste and overflow drain assembly included, though the drain hole itself is always pre-drilled—typically located at either the end or center of the tub, depending on the model. A tub shell may come with a pre-drilled overflow hole as well. Some freestanding tub models also feature a built-in drain and overflow, known as an integrated or integral drain with overflow.

Before selecting a freestanding tub drain, remember to review the technical specifications provided by the manufacturer to learn which types of tub drains are compatible with your new bathtub. Always consult a professional plumber to ensure proper installation of a new freestanding tub drain.

Types of Drain Stoppers for Freestanding Tubs

Most contemporary freestanding tubs are designed to accommodate a standard-size drain. A standard-size freestanding tub has a 1.5 inch drain opening (though some larger jetted tubs may have a drain opening that measures 2 inches in diameter).

A drain stopper or closure is used to open and close the drain opening, allowing the tub to hold water when closed and to release (drain) water when opened. A variety of stopper mechanisms are used for a standard-size tub drain, including lift-and-turn, pop-up, toe-touch, flip-it, trip lever, and push-and-pull drain stoppers. Most modern freestanding tubs feature a lift-and-turn or pop-up drain stopper.

Common Types of Tub Drains for Freestanding Bathtubs

Several types of tub drains are commonly used with freestanding tubs, including straight tub drains and leg tub drains.

Straight Tub Drain

A straight tub drain with lift-and-turn stopper (sometimes referred to as lift-and-turn tub drain) is a type of drain assembly commonly used in freestanding tubs that do not have overflow. Also known as a lift-and-turn (or twist-and-lift) tub drain, it features a simple lift-and-turn closure mechanism mounted directly on the straight drain pipe. Lift and turn the knob on top of the stopper to open the drain; to close the drain, twist or turn the knob in the opposite direction (and push it down to lock it into place). This simple tub drain design is a popular choice for modern acrylic free standing tubs without overflow. A lift-and-turn straight tub drain typically requires underfloor access.

Leg Tub Drain

leg tub drain is another common type of drain for freestanding tubs. A leg tub drain is often referred to as a clawfoot tub drain. Because a clawfoot tub is elevated on legs and lacks a concealing apron or skirt, the vertical drain pipe (aka leg) in this drain assembly is often exposed, becoming a visible part of the tub’s classic, vintage aesthetic.

A lift-and-turn drain stopper is typically used with a leg tub drain. A leg tub drain may have height and depth adjustability. You can purchase a leg tub drain with overflow, as well as a leg tub drain without overflow.

Pop-Up Tub Drain

Many modern freestanding tubs feature a  pop-up tub drain with overflow, a type of tub waste and overflow assembly that includes either a toe-tap or push-button drain stopper. A push-button pop-up drain, sometimes referred to as a soft touch tub drain, can be opened or closed with a simple press or push on the drain cover. Because the drain stopper is spring-loaded, pressing it causes the drain to "pop" into the closed position to hold water. Pressing the stopper again opens the drain, allowing water to drain freely.

Tower Drain

tower drain and overflow is a type of external standing waste and overflow drain commonly used with vintage-style clawfoot tubs. In this type of drain system, both the drain and overflow mechanisms are mounted outside the tub in a tall vertical pipe or tower. The drain lift is also located outside the tub (operated by a knob or lever located on top of the tower).

Common Finishes for Tub Drain & Overflow Plate Covers

A drain cover or grate is a protective plate or grate that sits over a drain opening. Its primary purpose is to allow water to flow freely into the drain. It also helps prevent hair and debris from entering and clogging the drain pipe.

In contemporary freestanding tubs, drain covers are often integrated with the drain stopper mechanism (like in pop-up or lift-and-turn drains). Modern freestanding tubs typically feature a sleek pop-up drain stopper with a cover that either matches the white interior of the tub or has a contrasting metallic finish. The finish of this cover will also match the finish of the overflow faceplate for a coordinated appearance.
